Design-Build Single Family Home

The Heather Residence

Concept

Heather, a single-family design-build home, focuses on blurring spatial boundaries by using architectural elements to bring the outside environment inward and the inside environment outward.

strategy

A simple cubic shape placed on a platform base with a canopy-like roof establishes the defining elements of the living space between. This allows the opportunity to explore ways to allow the living space to become more fluid, ambiguously shifting the interior and exterior of each experience and perception of the spaces.

The simple volume of the house is carved to erode the defining shape to further distort the spatial boundaries between the inside and outside of the house.  The spatial perception is pronounced  by architectural elements such as, exaggerated cantilevers, balconies, porches and overhangs.

Careful consideration is taken in the placement of columns, openings, windows and the selection of materials to ensure the interior and exterior spaces become ambiguous, both in the physical boundaries and the spatial experience of the house.
